A new wave of change is about
to hit civic institutions demanding they be more responsive and accountable
to their neighbourhoods and communities. An ‘empowerment' white paper
in the summer is expected to outline proposals to make this happen.
This major one day conference will enable delegates to understand the
direction of this policy of empowerment and how they can ensure their
organisation is ready for such a change. Many of these proposals are
impacting on council, health and other services already and being adopted
by the best councils
The conference will set out
how local authorities can demonstrate strong and visible local leadership,
whilst at the same time, providing more opportunities through neighbourhoods,
new forms of consultation and feedback for communities to influence
and recall decisions plus review or challenge the delivery of services.
A greater ability for communities
to hold public officials, councils and other public organisations and
representatives to account locally is all part of the emerging new settlement
in local government. The event will also cover the challenge posed by
the resurgent issue of elected mayors.
This conference will examine
the impact of this on local councils, management accountability and
service delivery, and what officers and elected members need to do to
keep their council at the edge of best practice.
